Thanks to JM for the brakes, I have completed the Stage #1 build - single speed

The brakes are paired to some Dia Compe levers (from the tip, obviously) and some part worn Swiss Stop pads I found in the spare box. They are brilliant and will bring the bike up very, very quickly. Cables were from my road bike that I re-cabled recently with all-new bits.

I'm running 44-15 single speed and it is horrible! I don't live in somewhere particularly hilly but it is still a pain (in the knees). The ride quality of the bike however is superb. I deliberately left the chain long so I could go 1 x 10, I'm glad I did! Some gritty urban shots below.

42:17 is the normal starting point for road singlespeed / fixed so you are starting off at the tough end of the scale!

Amazing tip find. What a disposal life some people must live to just dump that. Well done on saving it. Can’t help but feel that if you have a rear mech then it should be used. A single speed really only at it best with a 1/8th chain and no tensioners involved!

TBH stuff like this isn’t unusual at my local. I’ve seen a few carbon bikes, 105, Ultegra, XTR etc. I’m looking forward to the recycle shop opening so people can offload their old carbon bikes to replace the new ones they bought in lock down
