Reynolds 753R?

I know nothing about this tubeset, what does the R designate (road/race?) and how does it differ from plain 753?

Is there anything to be aware of when considering a frame of this tubing?

Cheers in advance.

753r is lovely stuff, makes for a quick lively frame and needs to be treated well.

I have seen a couple of bikes with a rogue 753 sticker that didn't check out so measure the frame's tubing diameters, most easily the seatpost should be 26.4mm.

I have had two frames in my possession in varying states and I would say that they biggest danger to this tubing is corrosion. It is worth thoroughly inspecting any 753 frame that you are looking at buying and if possible have a peek inside a tube or two. If buying a complete bike ask when the bottom bracket was last replaced as both of mine had the original BB still in place which took some removing particularly the Non Drive Side. Check that the seatpost moves freely and inspect the seatpost area for any damage that may have been caused by heat being applied to release a stuck seatpost. 753 tubing was brazed at much a lower temperature using a silver braze meaning that any joins could be seriously weakened by heat being applied.

Get a good'un and you can build a super fast bike with some unique riding characteristics and keep up with those flashy modern machines on something they think looks like your Grandad's old bike!!

Are they really all 26.4 seatpost diameter? :?

I have a acquired a 753R frame from a very reputable source but it's a 27.2 post.

Sorry, I don't mean to alarm you. A poorly written reply whilst eating cereal :)

Mine both were, which helped reassure me of their validity as 753 whereas when checking out potential bikes a seatpost of 27.2mm would leave me needing further information to guarantee a 753r and to hand over any notes.

I'm sure your frame is all tip top

Well I will be able to verify it for sure, because the guy who I will take it to for paint is the original builder

So if he doesn't know, well...

Well that's cleared things up

So it depends if it is imperial or metric, I may hold off buying a post until the frame actually arrives. Although I'm inclined to trust the seller's reputation.
