Had a bad experience with flies today... DAMN annoying, buzzing around my head and ears until I could get to downhill sections. What is it with them? It's not like I smell like horse shit or anything...
i was cycling down a narrow whin/stone path when 6 or 7 very small rabbits ran out infront of me a few years ago . they ran right at me , i hit one of them (just) then tryd to jump a log to avoid the rest of them .
i ended up doing my famous superman party peice (but i never hit any of the other rabbits) the bike was fine too with only the seat facing to the right and the chain had fell off
I find I have more animal related moments when on my SS, in stealth mode as it were. Less so on my geared bikes, all that clanking scares em off . Frogs are my main bugbare, they don't move regardless and make a hell of a mess if i can't avoid them.
I see deer, rabbits, groundhogs, chipmunks, squirrels etc. pretty much every ride. Every once in a while I have to brake to avoid hitting them, especially on road rides.
I see foxes and snakes on some rides and last summer saw a black bear, but it was about the length of a football field away from me.
On one road ride a small bird flew right into my empty water bottle cage, got stuck, and flailed around for a bit. After it finally extricated itself I turned around to see if it was OK but before I got there a car nailed it
Bitd during a race at Whipstakes Farm a rabbit ran across in front of me as I was going through a bomb hole! With nowhere else to go I swerved into the undergrowth and the front wheel dropped into a rabbit hole. Wheel ended up crisp shaped. I'm sure the rabbit did it on purpose as I could almost hear it laughing!
It was in the hedge, ran straight under the front wheel. Then the back finished it off. Those Speed Kings ain't so lightweight after-all. Or maybe my 80Kg didn't help.
Earlier this year I was riding along the shore of lake windermere when ahead of me I saw a stag in the middle of the track watching me watching him about 40metre's away, then it strolled off into the woods so I rode up to were it had been stood looked around and again about 40metre's away he was watching me then turned around and disappeared.
I see deer most mornings on the ride in to work (I see their eyes on the ride home in the dark at times too), loads of pheasant too. Last week took the biscuit, bloody peacock! I think it's from one of the farm houses I ride past.
As I SS to work through the woods I often see foxes, deer, owls, bats, mice, rabbits by the skip load, owls, stoats, weasels, squirrels etc. A single speed is so quiet they don't know your there until your on top of them. Followed a fox for 100 yards or so on some single track recently, the critter nearly wet itself when it realised how close i'd got
