Retrobike resolutions 2025?

I have already failed. I bought a bike yesterday. I still plan to clear out several bikes and parts. With GT changing ownership and the future unknown, I bought a modern Zaskar at half off. I don't think I have ever bought a new bike for myself before. It will be interesting to see the contrast between my 95 Zaskar LE and a new Zaskar.

I'd bee keen to hear what you think too!

Given most people's resolutions, this is not an invitation to more bike buying, but this past year I kept track of all my bike-related purchases and sales, and I for once reached my goal of making the hobby self-supported!!

I bought stuff for 1,810€ and sold 1,990€ worth of it. And that is including 4 more bikes in the shed and some upgrading of the existing ones (mostly through buying bikes for their parts and selling again with the downgraded bits), plus 5 orders to different online shops for spares. I bought 23 bikes and sold 19. Except for a small sized 26" to cover the 10 to 13 age to leave by the in-laws, I have all the bikes needed for my kids until adulthood (I really hope they prefer my steel classics to a boring Cube hardtail or I'm f*cked!)

I live in Germany in a relatively dense area so the local classifieds are a goldmine. I spend more time there than in any social media...

That's a goal I almost reached. I sold 7 bikes and bought 3 I was searching for ages.
I know those are rookie numbers but now I have enough to tinker the whole year.

I just wanted to give a quick update on the 2025 resolutions topic. Summer is ending, at least for those on the upper half of the house, so it's that time of year where the time spent riding vs tinkering slowly swaps to the later. The 23rd September is the workhop equinox.

I have failed in getting no more bikes, but it has been a much controlled and selective process, in which I have said no to many "deals" in order to keep the stock (and the workhop waiting list) at similar levels as the previous year. The kids are growing and that will help to reduce bikes in the coming months as I already have the next size ready.

I have succeeded in getting the small 26" bike that will be the next one for my oldest son. A Breezer Storm I got for an amazing price. Another success is my fitness, even though it was mostly achieved through jogging instead of biking, which is more time-efficient. Still a win. We also did a cycling family trip from Germany to Spain in summer as planned (more train than cycling, but still).

Pending for the remaining months of 2025 is to go through all the bikes and leave them in perfect working order, but this is going well, and hopefully better as nights get longer. I'm lucky my office has a huge secure parking, so I've taken most of my bikes there, and I only have 1 at home that require work each time. This helps a lot in terms of focus and getting things done, so I am progressing quick. In the process, 1 more bike will be put for sale. I already have another one for sale, plus a third one I am keeping as I'm using it as parts donor while the rest is being repaired. When finished, I will fix this one and put up for sale cheap.

The selling part is going incredibly slow as the market seems to be dead right now, at least locally. Even super-deals I see from other people take a couple of weeks to sell, when before they would be gone in hours. Luckily I only have 3 bikes to go, and I got them cheap so I have no pressure to reach a certain price point.

1) Ride more

2) Clear the clutter and sell the stuff I'm just not going to use

3) Accept that as I get older I can't do the things I used to, but that doesn't mean I can't spend time enjoying the things I can - which in this case is riding the quiet country lanes and bridlepaths on my cross bike, and exploring pubs and tearooms on the way

Great to look back and reflect.

1) Abject fail. I need to get out far more, and as we move into winter, this is probably not going to happen.

2) Pretty much done this. Cleared a lot of stuff. Bought three bikes. Sold two. One more to go. Found my Unicorn.

3) This is my mantra.

Ride the bikes I’ve got… specifically; take the Pioneer on an extended off road tour - possibly the King Alfred’s Way.

Failed to take the Pioneer out on that tour and still haven't done the King Alfred's Way, but I did ride my bikes more this year, particularly the Rocky Mountain for some reason.

Do, rather than talk about doing, the Trans Cambrian.

Big fat fail - I did do the Dorset Gravel Dash though.

Ride more audax.

This I certainly achieved, with at least a couple more planned before the years end, also super pleased to have ridden the Exmouth Exodus (for the 4th time) this year.

Take a bike abroad.

Didn't take a bike abroad but I did ride bikes abroad, including a memorable ride with some of the gang from CL Cycles in Montreal.

Commute - and not just by Brompton.

This I definitely managed - still working on my dynamo set up to extend the commutable part of the year too.

Clear out some stuff - parting with a frame (or two) may be an emotional wrench but it will be a positive step forward.

Finally sold the Raleigh - it felt good to let it go. Still more stuff to sort through, though the market is slow, so if it's not actually in the way / taking up useful space I'm not going to beat myself up about holding onto a few bits that I have no current plans for.
