Retro versus new - the aesthetics....

Re:

I love spindly steel frame, not a fan of chunky frames.

Cranks should be silver, never black :!:

I like Chris de Burgh, Lady in Red

Re:

After an absence of more years than I care to remember I went into an Evan superstore recently,

duly walked all the way round through both MTB and road sections and then straight out the door with a heavy heart

surely not everyone one in the world whats a matt black bike,

could argue chainset design went down teh tubes when they went low profile. whats wrong with a nice bendy 122mm spindle? meh

op mentions matt black bikes, thats what ppl want right now. but theres no shortage of horrid coulourschemes around, take a look at what scott have been churning out the last 10 years. and not so long ago sram did a whole range of annodised components, what happend to them? nobody was interested.

the thing that really really makes me wanna vomit is bent downtubes. most especially those hydroformed aluminium efforts. bluergh.

I think the Matt black/grey thing is on its way out

Quite a few fluro bikes out there at the moment

And lots very nice new steel bikes that look very good, both road and hardtail

I think even specialised have added a steel adventure bike to the range

Some of the new kit is also really nice looking, e.g. the single speed slx m7000 crank is very very lovely

I think new wheels can still be a bit lairy mind

Totally agree. SLX M7000 is pretty nice - and hopefully a direction for the future. You can still get some nice cranks - White Industries are stunning. Middleburn too before they went bust. Sadly quite expensive.

87-93 is definitely my favourite aesthetic period for many of the reasons described above. But I think some modern stuff is great - steel bikes from Surly, Salsa, Singular etc. Plus if you can afford it Field and Shand make some amazing custom bikes for some lucky people. Jones and Stooge are also cool.

no one makes a pretty chainset any more. Even campag have stopped. If you think the MTB ones are bad, you should see some of the abominations foisted on roadies

It's true, the 4 bolt 5800 silver chainset on my Sycip makes me feel sad, I mean it's light and stiff and changes gear well, but at what aesthetic cost?! I was struggling to find anything that works with 11 speed and that is anywhere near good looking AND relatively affordable - nada.

Re:

I like everything Shimano do...

...about 10 years after it comes out.

I think one of the problems at the mo is that groupsets are deigned with carbon or fat tubed alu frames in mind and really look daft on steel frames.
