Are you going to be riding the bike or polishing it in the shed/garage/bedroom?
It seems to me that garage queens can have the option of being period correct or covered in chichi; bikes for using can have whatever works, and you can put up with older stuff that works well or fit newer stuff that works better.
My two Retro bikes are built on this principle as they both get used... I am using some chichi but only if it adds to the experience (and looks... obviosly). If the performace deteriorates to an unacceptable degree then the chichi will be replaced by something that WORKS!
