Retro Syncros vs Modern Thomson

Thomson gear always looks really cheap to me.... not sure why. :?

Im a fan of both, I had syncros on my old Orange, and have Thomson on my newer KHS.

If it were me, on a funk I would keep it syncros all the way. Thomson just wouldnt look right to me.

Hmmm not sure either, when I read you were doing the Funk in a grey/anthracite(?) colour thought it might be too modern looking and adding the thomson stuff might push it even further that way. Got to say the thomson stuff in silver would look good with manitous mind.

Seeeeee, this is hard! A silver stem/post/bar is a silver stem/post/bar isn't it? And I think the frame can carry off a modern look, especially when painted. Humpf, too difficult

2 cents worth:

I run a Thomson seatpost and stem and also a syncros seatpost and stem and I have to say that the quality is excellent on both but the Thomson wins on engineering, weight and finish.

Well worth the (modern) money!

Have you considered running a non-oversize Thomson stem? It'd pass as retro and give you none of the disadvantages of the Syncros system.

My vote was for Thomson for the simple reason that it won't crimp your steerer.

I always thought Syncros was over-rated though, even back in the day.

The Thomson seatpost is probably the most precisely machined seatpost ever made - in terms of guaranteeing the stated size is the actual size, to the 2nd decimal point. (meaningless unless your seat-tube is reamed with the same precision - few are - but if you have an over-reamed seat tube and slightly-less than stated diameter seatpost, it can give "issues".

So I'd go for that too. It's also passable as retro.

Voted for the Thompson parts, not because they´re better looking but just because they´re Damn good, they just do the job are extremely well made and more sexy than most new parts IMHO

ps: have to ad that their setback seatpost is plain ugly though (..also IMHO that is offcourse :roll: )

Yep, really tempted by the Elite 25.4 stems in silver then I can run a retro silver bar (or even my old Titec until I find something else).

I really think this is going to be a retro/modern combo and think it will be ok in my eyes anyway. I have both retro DX and modern XT sat here on my desk and a print of Andy.l's Funk and I really think it could carry the mixed look off.

Good thing is there appears to be enough Thomson Elite on the 'Bay to do this fairly reasonably (not retro + everyone modern going oversize = bargains to be had, I hope!).

I have both a setback and a normal Thomson, personally I like the look of both but I can see how some people might not like the layback one. HOWEVER, they are both the most beautifully machined seatposts I have ever seen, to the point where it seems like a shame to put it on a bike and get it muddy. But we all do...

I have a Masterpiece seatpost on my Carbon road bike and an Elite post on my Pace XCAM
