Retro Ronde van Vlaanderen foreplay

In fact, April is the driest month - at least in Belgium, according to official stats. April 2006 is the only calendar month during which zero precipitation was recorded since records began in the 19th century. So, you needn't expect it to be cruel.

I did the 150K sportive in 2005 and it was glorious sunshine all the way around (though chilly at the start). 2006 was dry but overcast, 2007 was a deluge, 2008 dry but windy, 2009 another nice day, 2010 scattered showers but nothing serious. June normally brings pretty fine weather though.

Anyway, as you can see from my location and avatar, I'm based locally and will be happy to help any RBers out with any logistics and arrangements. I'm planning to ride both the regular sportive in April (probably on a modern carbon machine) and the retro ronde in June on an old Raleigh.

TBH, for the most part the pave on the Ronde is no big deal - it absolutely doesn't compare with Paris-Roubaix. There's about 20km pave in total, and most of it is uphill on the 'bergs so you don't notice it as much. There are two sections descending on pave and two long-ish flat drags, and that's it. I wouldn't choose to ride a Klein, but the idea of doing so wouldn't put me right off. I rode on 25mm tyres and they were spot on - I don't think I'd go to the effort of putting 28mm on if they weren't already mounted.

As mentioned above, if you're coming from Hull then the ferry to Zeebrugge is a smart option, especially if you're thinking of doing the full 260km sportive which starts in Brugge, about 10km away.

Any further questions, just fire away!

Cheers,
Gareth.

April is the cruellest month.

Much preferred is flaming June.

April.

It was quote bro, from the poet T.S Eliot's"Waste Land"(1926), he was one of the great poets of the first half of the 20th Century.

It wasn't meant to be a weather forecast :D .

"We are the Hollow men...", there I go again, another quote..

Looks like we have a lot of locals to the classics routes present here, I live on the Amstel territory.
My participation in the classic Ronde wil depend a bit on my Paris-Brest preparations. I've not yet decided if I'll do some serious riding in the weekend of the classic Ronde or the weekend before. If it's before, the Ronde could be a good cool-down ride.

Re: April.

Yeah, I got that, reminded me of English A level just a couple of decades ago!

I just wanted to assure folks that April over here is not as bad as you might think or assume, and so the actual RvV sportive in April is definitely a viable trip. Plus you get to go watch the race the following day, camping out on the Kapelmuur with an icebox full of beer. Good times!

Cheers, Gareth.

Belgium.

Have to admit that last time I was in Belgium, in Ypres or"Wipers" - it was sunny and dry (in December).

Sunny and dry all week.

We did the battlefield thing...upsetting but needed to be done.

Be good to do this event - if we can get enough Brits motivated (I'll only make it if the costs can be shared).

This is encouraging, thanks for the interest. Personally I'm only interested in the Retro Ronde in June which is really what the thread is about. I agree with Roadking that a get together would be good for anyone in our neck of the woods. When are you taking the frames John? I'll need a bit of notice to be sure I'll be at home and not hammering the miles in as preparation

Ned.

Am awaiting transfers etc from Lloyds, once I have them and have spoken to Chris I'll call you with at least a week's notice (don't think it'll be this month somehow).

Flaming June is better than April - got my wet weather riding t-shirt, don't want the video!

Regards, Roadking.

In addition to myself and Roadking - is anyone 'oop north' interested?

Really need to be sorting accomodation very soon or we won't find any!

And I need to apply for my passport as well if it's definitely a 'goer'.!

I will probably go. I am not far. Accomodation... hmm, is it really the case that you can't find a hotel or camping site that time of the year? The event itself will not generate an enormous crowd I think.

@Johnny
It is very nice from you offering us to show around :)

Appears I may have been right, for little or no interest from the Brits for this ride - perhaps they have armchairs affixed their seatposts rather than saddles :) ?!

Speak soon...
