Retro Ronde 2015

As usual, I would love to do it.

But I've been saying that for the past 5 years - and still haven't!

Re:

I'd be glad to help if anyone needs any assistance with practical arrangements.

I live the wrong side of Brussels, about an hour and a half's drive from
Oudenaarde, but give me a shout if anyone wants to extend their visit and do some riding in my neighbourhood.

I was there for the first time this year. Mrs non-fixie had come along for the weekend and loved the atmosphere so much on Friday and Saturday that she decided to buy a cap and a wool jersey on the spot, get dispensation for her non-regulation handlebars and come along for the ride on Sunday as well. A great event. We'll certainly be back in 2015.

Re:

Nonregulation? Is it simply that butterfly bars are regarded as post1987? Are North Roads OK or only drops?

In my experience, the 'enforcement' of the regulations is not strict at all.

At the beginning of the ride, you can choose to go up on stage to have your bike inspected
and show it off to the crowd, or just go straight to the start line without having your bike checked.

I saw a couple of guys riding round on aluminium Cannondales with STIs (they were also wearing tweed outfits, which was a bizarre combination). I also saw a guy riding round on a para bike in full WWII para gear.

North Road bars and similar were used on the popular 'cafe racer' type bikes, which were even ridden in some amateur races, according to some of the vintage photos I've seen. So they would be quite authentic in a way.

The idea behind rides like these is to be on a vintage bike and look the part. Butterfly bars are never going to fit into that, IMO. North Roads are fine on a bike that would or could have been supplied with upright bars like that. On a Merckx Corsa they're a no-go; you need drops. Again IMO.
