Retro rebuild Henry Burton Bike

Capreolus

Retro Newbie
I purchased this frame minus forks last year of ebay for £26.00 inc postage.
I took a gamble as it had been in a smash and when I received it I stripped it all down and found that the head tube had a fatigue crack in it as well. Its a 25.5 inch frame by Henry Burton built in the mid to late sixties , not one imported and badged up but actually made by him at his shop .

I had a new head tube brazed in by Briggs in Yorkshire and sourced a set of period forks but needed a steerer tube fitting at 235mm at a price for the work £210 not counting the fork purchase which was around £30.

as you can see the components used in the rebuild are slightly later than the frame build date .
I have used all campagnolo record gears including a 1st generation set up with 177.5 campag strada cranks .
The frame is constructed with nervex lugs and fluted detail to the back stays on the seat tube with vertical rear campag drop outs.
I am very pleased with the result although I dont ride it as often as i would like to since having major heart surgery. but I do get out on it now and again.
The rebuild has taken me over 12 months to do and given me a challenge sourcing all the parts.

Lovely. I was a regular when I lived in those parts, and still bought the odd thing even when I moved away. Once someone in the shop drove 60 miles to drop off some wheels they'd built because he was worried about them getting damaged in the post. I was so shocked I didn't invite him in for a cuppa.

Incredible service.

Re:

I have to agree with you as when I was doing the paint job I needed the transfer name lettering and they was very obliging in supplying them even though they didnt carry out any work all on the rebuild
at a very fair price I thought less than £20 inc postage.

Initially I was going to fit Mafac tiger brakes to the bike which again would not have been supplied on the original when built but eventually opted for Weinmann due to the costs of the Mafac tigers being pricey.

I will put more clearer photos up when I can I think I have something wrong with the camera unless its a incorrect setting.
Cheers
Stuart
