Retro Kona Ident help

Retro Newbie
Hi Guys,

I have been bidding on a retro kona on ebay, the seller of which has had some very questionable feedback... namely, bad!

The bike itself was being sold as a 'Joe Murray Kona Explosive' lol which when searching for a Kona Explosif was as you can imagine, pretty difficult to find! In fact I only found it when I was searching for the Joe Murray Decal.

Anyway, despite the low price (it ended up going for £211) would have had to spend another £25 on courier fees but that was no problem. I just didn't feel comfortable.

Looking at the stem and the frame color (black) it looks exactly like my old Lava Dome but with the Explosif sticker slapped in place of 'Lava Dome' I can't remember any of the retro Explosif models coming in black.

Let us know your thoughts guys!!

I can't remember if it was 91 or 92 or both but there was an option to have any of the range in black as opposed to the original colour.

I guess, that does make sense, though that rear brake looks suspiciously Lava Dome and I still have doubts about the stem.

Still, the guys feedback spoke reams, better to miss a fantastic deal than end up with a grifter eh?

Not that i'd pass up a lava dome, had one loved it... then it got pinched! Just couldn't trust the fella and being halfway up the country it wasnt lke i could pop over and complain.

It depends what else was on it though and better pics, www.konaretro.com has catalouges as do we here in the Gallery and Archive.

Explosive Pro's standard issue in 92 (maybe 91) was black and the stem etc where common to pretty much all models... part of kona light or something.

The Kona Knowledge Krowd will be along shortly, but I would start at 1992 as from talk on her it was the first to use band style seat clamps.
But the decals look later (93 or 94 they changed ?) could just be new decals though stuck on to tidy it up.

I could go look in the cat's but i'll leave you to it and the others that know more.

Was this the auction where the bloke's feedback said he was bit of a headbanger?

Interested to know if he was or just bad press from disgruntled buyers, anyone on here get it?

Depends what you mean by headbanger... lots of threats of violence, sellings of dodgy cars, vans, and one which was still on finance. things that dont arrive. All things that didnt instill a happy transaction. lol

Was him then, strange how some people said he was ok though

Can't say it would put me off if I wanted it, but might have gone along mob handed to be on the safe side

That said... and if the bike was what he stated, I would have had a tidy little project for under £230 u recon?
