Retro frame with modern parts??

if its the welded, ie non unicorn fork then i wouldnt ride it at all. in my humble opinion the welded klein fork was the most gorgeous klein fork ever made & 1 of my fave looking rigid forks ever. unfortunately they had a bad habit of cracking, which is why they were in production for such a short time scale.

mix modern & new to your hearts content, its your bike!

I say do it . . . My orange has a few modern bits on it, bugger it i say . . . . do what you want as long as you ride it

I spent a few weeks looking for a retro seat post in an obscure size . . . . Why??? I couldnt ride the bike! so i went and got a shim and got hold of a modern FSA post and why the hell not! . . . . there are a few guys on here that will pull their hair out but im sure i can say this. . . . . that most of us would rather be out on our bikes then waiting for a unique retro part! :D

I mix new parts and old frames all the time.

Whatever works. A lot of old stuff is still as good today as it was then. In fact, a lot of old stuff is better than today's stuff. Old school frames rock. It's mostly components that have improved significantly. The miserable old cantilever brakes of the early nineties cannot come close to today's disc brakes. On the other hand, quill stems and threaded steerers are perfectly good. I don't know why they were ever replaced.

Use what you like. Who cares what anybody thinks?

?

oem reasons. namely threaded fork steerers in different fork lengths were a PITA to produce. 1 super long ahead steerer is a lot easier/cheaper to make.

Regarding the Carbon Cranks with Square Taper question, I have some FSA Crabon cranks on my Control Tech Bike. No they dont work with square taper, they come with their own external bottom bracket that replaces your current BB. A real nice looking crankset, but if you are going to actually ride the bike I would suggest a lightweight aluminium crankset(I love Tune stuff because it has a retro feel) as they are more resistant to impact damage.

Hmmm, so I may actually have a go at this...

Only a few things I was wondering about:

- I know all this SRAM X.0 stuff is pretty cool, but the downside is that SRAM don't make a nice front mech at all :-( They have the X-GEN front mech, but AFAIK this is quite a bit heavier than a Shimano XT/XTR i.e. And if I'd use SRAM X.0 stuff I'd like to avoid Shimano "schtuff" all together (yes I know it's neurotic, but it's what bugged me when I still had my Scott Scale).

- Been looking around for square taper cranks, they are out there I saw... mostly Race Face :?: Anyhow, problem there is with my KLEIN frame is that there is this press-fit BB in it (I think it's 122 or 125mm, for XT M730 cranks). So this means I need to either swap the BB for a shorter one (107 or 112 or summin') or try finding a crank that takes 122mm for spindle length?

- And of course, I wanna keep canti brakes... I hate the look of V-brakes while there is some canti-holder sticking out of the back (and no, I won't grind it off hehe). So how would i.e. keeping my Ritchey cantilevers on this bike with all the modern stuff look like??

It's not that I need approval from you guys like someone said (no offence), but I just have a bit of a hard time picturing this combination in my mind. It would be a shame to spend a bag of money on modern stuff and then finding out that I might as well have spent it on retro parts because it looks like sh*t. Would end up selling the stuff for next to nothing like I did my Scale :-( Would rather not have that again to be honest (I'm not rich enough for this crap )

Anyway, thanx for the advice so far... so what do you think about the above problems? And is it actually worth the hassle?? Because now my Attitude is fully built and I use it with great pleasure to ride. It's more like "I wonder how light and fast it would be with all this modern stuff", and I know that X.0 stuff rides really well since I had it on my Scale.

As long as you don't want to put integrated shifter/brake units then no prob re canti brakes.

Re chainset. That's gonna be tough. I can't think of any mod. chainsets that'll let you run an axle that long.

But if you can go shorter. Then I have just one word. "Middleburn".
