restoration - how far do you go?

I did buy some slightly dirty ones a long while back. They will do actually.

I don't know what's wrong with me. None of it makes sense.

I hammer my Marin Ti's. The ones that have been fully built at some point!

as some bits are simply never going to be found - it will be rebuilt as follows:

1993 frame

1994 Hope/ Mavic wheels

1993 110 bcd Topline cranks

? Tange Switchblade forks

YAY! '93 GT Flipflop stem :) (original spec part)

1993 XT black XT cantis :) (original spec part)

? modified XT short cage XT rear mech

? band on XT front mech

1993 XT STI :) (original spec part)

? GT flat bars

The rest - depends on what I can get my mitts on.

Not bad at all.

Some of us prefer restoring the bike up to the original specs so that the bike would look just like it was when it was sitting on the local bike shop when new. Some again would like to build up the bikes like they would had upgraded it (hey, everyone did that BITD) and then there's people who build them as pimped up as they can (dream bike so to say).

I think your build would sit in the "upgraded" category and that would be perfectly fine!

That's probably true....wait long enough and bits WILL materialise....

waiting for stuff to bloody turn up is a pain though!

Tell me about it

You need to get all Zen about it - then it doesn't 'matter' anymore 8)

restoration.

Some good points made. :D ....
I restored my Orange Aluminium "O" to get it running and photographed so I could put it in the reader's rides ( ..as I hadn't seen any others on here! ). It is however, not 100% how mine was BITD. Prehaps I'm going too far... but I'm in the process of changing a few bits to make it 100% 'my spec'....but how far is too far?

At the moment I'm .....

Changing the XT thumbies to DX NOS because that's what I had!
Having a 'Custom stalk' made as there's none out there whatsoever!
Got some NOS MA40's from the 'king and having them rebuilt on the original hubs
Control tech to Syncros pin because that's what I had!
still after those Amberwall Smokes!!!

...and then I'm going to ride it like BITD!! :D

As for Magics... Madcowkev recommended put them in the washing machine on a low temp wash!!... they come up a treat. Don't be afraid to use 'em! :D

Some good points made here. The 1994 bike I am restoring could be rebuilt to it's original OE spec but finding the correct bits would take a very long time and also be very expensive. I have decided to restore the bike back to how it was in 1998 when I stopped riding it with a few period correct enhancements. The bike was upgraded to a certain spec and that is how I remember it best.

I have stripped the bike and am in the process of painstakingly cleaning and rebuilding every part, polishing the frame and have new decals for it. When it's finished it will be a stunner IMO
