ok,i have ,'a few bikes' that need looking at.

do i strip the paintwork and respray with fresh cables etc?
or do i keep the paint work with all the patina,scratches,'; history n stuff and replace the cables,re-grease n stuff

advise me please!

Got some pics, or a description of the frames? Obviously, it's a really subjective question, and you'll likely get opinions on both sides for any given frame. The short answer is usually: 'it depends'.

A full resto is really rewarding, and riding a repainted frame and fork with nicely buffed up parts feels better than a new bike....... but if you've put the patina there in the first place and have memories of putting all the scratches there then keep them........you can't buy those.......

theres a few :?
i dont mind the opinions,thats why i posted!
we find these 20+ odd year old bikes that really would have been skip bound ,with all the marks,scratches that probably tell the odd story.

i know!the patina'd bikes are not made by me though,and a fresh repainted bike would look sweet,but they are old bikes....also those decals!! :?
maybe just strip ,key and semi matt. regrease bearings,new cables and service.

I'm restoring a complete bike and did consider just giving it a good wash and then professionally clear coating over the decals and scratches. It'd be lovely and shiny - like a new bike - but have it's history sealed in.

I went for new decals and a full respray in the end. Roll on January!

There have been a few threads on this but a quick synapses:

Do not restore if your goal is to make money because you are going to loose money;
Do restore if it is a personal project and you just love the bike;
Do restore if the bike is really bad but somewhat rare or desired;
Do not restore if said rare bike is in original condition and/or belonged to someone famous like John Tomac...

The original condition caveat is particularly important with really old and rare bikes, 50+ years, because the original finish, even if it is faded and scratched, can add hundreds if not thousands to the value.

Example: My 1969 Cinelli has been lovingly restored and carries all of the period correct parts, I spent about $2000 usd on the project. I would estimate the value somewhere around $2000 usd, However if it had the original finish then you could easily tack an additional $1000 to that price. If it had been raced by someone famous....?????

Your bike looks like a typical mid range MTB from the 90s, so without a doubt clean them up, repack and cable, then ride them or pass them on.

That example is a low end MTB looking at the components, sub Deore. Don't boither its nowt special and a repaint just turns it into a generic budget bike. Unless you do the full repro, but that's costly for what it us. Top end quality frame you wish to keep and ride, they may be worth it.

ive got a bike with moss on it an its staying that way lol, like above if its low spec an no importance to you dont bother, if you always wanted one, had it as a kid or mates had one ect then maby yes as you will keep it

do both, patina on lesser models if not that bad and full resto on a fecked high end....or visa versa. totally depends on current condition and how YOU feel about the bike. my muddy fox was stripped, cleaned and rebuilt with only a handfull of new bits but kept the patina, it wasnt mine but the bike does have a tale to tell somewhere, however the cindercon, although only a mid price bike, was in dire need of resto, the paint, metal and condition was bad, hence the new paint and parts, i didnt keep it OE though. your call but it could be costly to restore owt lol
