Hi - going to get my Harry Hall resprayed/powdercoated - how do I prepare it ie do i need to somehow cover the bb threads and the under bb cable guide is riveted in place - seems like a good idea to remove it?????

Even at £30 ( they usually do it as a spare item for cash in hand ) good powdercoating firms will prep the frame, stripping it of rust and old paint. Chase out the painted threads afterwards using your local bikeshop's tools on a quiet weekday using choccy Hobnobs and begging. You shouldn't need to mask the cable guides-I didn't.

can anyone recommend coating firms, personally speaking any where near West Yorks, Manchester etc as I need to me SC full susser.

Not usually. Simply getting longer bolts of the same size and running them through works or there's cheap tap+dye sets out there for less than a tenner but I've never needed it. BBs only need masking if you're facing for Hollowtech II and headsets will need facing only if you're using a Chris King headset ( they have monster fussy bearing tolerances ).

Have you got your heart set on powder coating? It does have a tendancy to crack and chip. I'd investigate a wet spray and better too a 2 pack finish.

where do you get your powder coating done?! It don't crack or chip mate and it's a thick coat. I've had 3 done so far and there's a good dozen bikers in Bristle who swear by the local powdercoater.

I'm going off what I was told when I took my alpinestars and many mx frames in the past for shot blasting.Agency_Scum":2x62lns7 said:
The original paint on the alpinestars was a thin layer of powdercoat (your shot blaster will tell you all about it as it's a pig to strip), he showed me several areas where the powder coat had cracked and chipped. I've also had experience with motocross frames coated thick with powdercoat and in areas of stress the same thing happens. Generally thick powdercoat has lasted no more than 5 seasons of racing, where wet paint has lasted to date 10 seasons, 2 pack done correctly should easily surpass that. Show me old frame that has been powdercoated and the stress areas will most probably be suffering with corrosion from it.
Great your local powdercoater is doing brisk trade, but I like my paint finishes to last. I build my bikes as if they are to last me forever and with my experiences powdercoat won't be a part of any of my builds.
