Resource overload / fairplay in BOTM

A bike is a bike is a bike. My two pence on this is that generally I build a bike that I want, and when finished, I am usually happy for a few days, then start tinkering. What other people think is a secondary concern tbh. I have seen various shows in TV about concourse car events and I really can't understand them - why have something you spend more time dribbling over then having to clean said dribble, than actually putting it to good use.

I have a friend that collects trainers (sneakers), and I sometimes buy the same pair as him and actually wear them, get them dirty and use them, just to see him cringe. He has a room full of boxes containing some very nice trainers, while I wore mine, got some use out of them and as an aside, may have looked cool for a few weeks whilst doing so.

I have entered BOTM once and I didn't get a single vote. Did I cry into spilt milk? Did I think that my pockets weren't deep enough? Not really (though I was a little hurt on the inside), as at the end of the day, BOTM should be about what people think of the bikes on display. We all vote after all, and if the bike that wins was built up by someone with endless finance, resources or anything else, we all voted for it, or didn't vote for something else. If it was won with a build with less money and backing thrown at it, so be it, we again voted for it (or didn't vote for something else).

Me personally, it's all about the bike. What do I like, what floats by boat, what is the history/reason/driving force/reasoning behind the build, the passion if you will. Some of my favourite builds (which may actually be of brands/bikes I'm not so keen on) are those where someone is going the extra mile, doing something different/personal, saving something special, not just buying NOS and hanging it on a mannequin. Let's face it, it's pretty easy to do that after all, as long as you have the cash to splash. I have a deep seated belief that money can't buy you everything especially respect.

Money will generally win out over anything else, and lets be honest, if we could, we would all own bikes dripping in boutique parts that are form over function, and made of a cheese alloy in an awesome anodised colour or two, or even that crazy splatter anno, but after throwing money at bikes over the last few years, my klein was a boneshaker, despite being a fantastic shade of gator, and dripping with turquoise ringle. My favourite bike I have built is actually a humble, albeit titanium Raleigh Dyna-Tech. There is just something about it that makes me smile, it rides well, looks great and just works (yes the hope, chris king and XTR help, but the frame is the soul).

I'll end this by saying I'm not out to offend anyone with my comments. I am guilty of throwing a bad bike together as much as the next man, but bad to some is good to someone else, everything is subjective, especially art, which in some respects BOTM has become.

I find it interesting that for a UK based website, with a (I believe) largely UK based membership, that so many of the entrants of BOTM, and certainly a lot of the... umm... passionate respondents (!) appear to be from outside of the UK, and 'Across the pond'.

Are the Brit bikers here not as competitive, or just more laid back when the inevitable bunfight starts?

We are the Knights of Sardonia.

Surely you're not surprised by his comments...

About as surprised as I am that someone got offended by my comments.
Being an arrogant d-bag does tend to offend people...no surprise there...

Just callin' it how I see it. I didn't single anyone or any bike out.
Some people are just quick to have feelings hurt or be offended I guess.

Re:

I think everyone should be allowed to enter as long as they don't break any of the rules. Sure, Nick and some others have a large inventory of components to choose from due to the nature of their business. For this reason some people will never vote for any of his bikes and that's their choice. Others have a large supply of boutique parts due to the length of time they've been collecting or just due to the nature of their bank balances - so what?

Discussion is good but the petty bitching, although sometimes funny, can be a bit tiresome and in some cases personal and offensive.

Everyone has their own voting criteria and it would be a pretty boring competition if this wasn't the case. Some like the most expensive bikes, some the rarest, some the cleanest, some the muddiest, some the underdog, some just vote for their mates bikes etc etc.

Just because it's your opinion it doesn't mean everyone else should agree with you.......

in a BoTM that was designed to exclude the people that preserve NOS, people are still gonna bitch about elitism

I dont care who you are, thats funny right there

Neither. They're more afraid of offending someone than calling a spade a spade.

Its actually unfair to label that 'Brit bikers' are this way. I would say the majority of the users on this forum are this way.
