Replacing a BB for the first time.. *1992 BBUN-50*

Right.. Decided to replace the BB on the Cromega. Needed a shorter axle (chainline issue) and my guess was it was the stock-BB anno 1992...

Never done it before so I got the right tool and read up on reverse-threads, insane amounts of penetrating oil, aneurysms etc etc.

Well, first off I manage to sprinkle all the non-drive-side splines on the floor. Crap. Well it's plastic. Old and brittle. I can get it out some other way.

Let's try drive-side.
Ah, right reverse-thread.
Slip.
Curse. Try again..
Slips again.

About half of the splines are busted. More cursing and some googling. Try to keep the tool in place with a crankbolt. This should do it!
Complete failure.. Not any splines at all   Call it a day and dreams of a new frame..

New day and new beginning, time to use some brute-force.
Part of the arsenal: Big ol' Thor-style hammer, mandrel, hacksaw, chisel, pipewrench, polygrip pliers, heatgun and wd-40.

Started to whack on the spindle on the drive-side. Felt good :D Pops out after a few minutes. The plastic cup on the non-drive-side is easily massacred and removable with some pliers.

The metal cup was the challenge.. Sprayed it with _alot_ WD-40 and heated the shell with the heatgun. Sawed off a piece to get some surface for the chisel to try to wack it in the right direction. Some more WD-40 and heat and I could grab it with the polygrip and turn it. Finally!

Threads were fine so the new BB was installed in a few minutes..
Some paint was chipped but the frame lives on :)

the beer did taste pretty good afterwards..

I'll take better care of my splines from now on

I love the big Manchester screwdriver in the first photo!

Hehe, yeah it's great, a real heirloom. Perfect for those fine adjustments. Maybe I should pitch it to Parktools. 8)
