Renovating Campagnolo Seatposts

Hi,

I've bought a C Record seatpost with a view to restoring it to its former glory for a project I'm planning. Whilst I know that the main part of the post can be polished, does anyone know if anything can be done to refurbish the cradle, which appears to have some corrosion' and where I might be able to get this done?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Re:

what you mean like getting a cheap bench grinder and replacing the grinding wheels with a polishing mop wheel
putting on safety glass's and leather gardening gloves and using polishing paste ?

Not really no, because the seatpost and the cradle are made of different materials and the surface coating (or anodising, whatever it is) of the cradle has flaked off in some areas.

Although I can't be certain, it appears that polishing the cradle in the same way you'd do the seatpost itself would remove the coating and make matters worse.

Thanks for your help though.

i see, yeah i know exactly what you mean its a darker harder cast item bit rough for want of a better word.
from previous posts i read that anodising can be removed with ovenpride.
there have also been posts on re anodising and i ts not too expensive by all accounts.
ive got an old sr stem and thats aged quite darker than my cinelli s and it might not buff up that well.
some might say once you have got rid of the flaky bits laquer or grease it, its tucked out of the way and does nt
matter.best thing is to send in a close up pic. someone here will know if it should be re plated.best wishes.

Re:

I've just taken a look at mine (on a bike), are you sure it is not just painted? Mine's perfect so tricky to assess the finish (doesn't look anodised though).

Rk.

im sure a platers could do something with it. gold plating could be an option if you want ? :)
my seat post is some where here.i suppose if its oxidizing then some thing must be done.
because they are small items that means more plating firms will be available .
i googled local ones and found four, but only one could take a whole frame.
[you did a fab job on the rest of it]

Thanks for all your help, there's some great suggestions. I'll get in touch with some local platers and see if they can restore it.

Looking at many of the other vintage Campagnolo seatposts it seems to be a common problem, so if I manage to get it sorted I'll post more pics if it helps anyone else looking to do the same.

Best wishes.
