Removing Lacquer from a carbon frame

Usual thing..older bike and flaking patchy lacquer but this one has carbon tubes.

How do I remove the lacquer from the carbon frame so I can then re-sticker, repaint the metal bits and re-lacquer the carbon?

Remove by lightly sanding. Clean with a solvent such as trichloroethylene. Re-spray. You may sand into the carbon a little, it will be ok and it will look great after the gloss.

Thanks for that..it's one of those frames that you think..why not give it a go and see how it works

If it's anything like carbon helmets you shouldn't sand through the gel coat to the carbon weave as it may well weaken it. As said lightly sand and don't go too mad.

How about Carbo-Lift? http://www.carbolift.com/Paint stripper stuff.

Video here.

I've not tried it yet, but certainly looks impressive, and friendly to use, no sanding...nothing carcinogenic, flammable, toxic or harmful either, apparently. Just a bit of skin and mucous membrane inflammation .

All the best,

I did see that, my only concern is that this is a tight budget and at $40 for 500mls..I can do it much cheaper with some patience and fine sandpaper and probably in a quicker time.

It's always good to know that products like that are around though

I did one with a 20 pack of fresh stanley knife blades once. It was dead easy and looked mint when finished. I do have the steady hand of a gunslinger though.

Find this in B&Q, it's essentially the same as Carbo lift.
