Here's a query for which I'm not sure I'll get a 100% good response ;)

Just put in an offer on a house which had been formerly let and smoked in. Obviously we'd be looking to get it at a low enough price to factor in new carpets and a complete repaint. Anyone been in a similar situation and had any tips or sucess / failure in removing stall fag smoke??

Trouble is john, that most of the specific fag smell destroyers just make your house smell like a clean ashtray, febreeze is a pretty good bet though.

New carpets and a re-paint should get rid of the smell no worries. If you're keeping the old curtains get them cleaned. If the paint is badly stained with nicotine then give it a good sponge down with sugar soap before painting. This will stop the stains coming through.

Yeah, had a car which had been smoked in (hence the slight trepadation) and none of the supermarket solutions worked. In the end stripped the interior out and basically washed it.

That's what I had in mind. Intereswted if others had done it (or got someone in to do it) and if it had worked?

An old tip for removing fag niffs from cars (not sure if it would work with a house), is to leave a wash bowl of fresh lawn clippings on the back seat, replacing daily until the pong is gone.
Does your new house have a big lawn, and can you wait till spring?

This would work imo...

Maybe wash the paintwork before the repaint too..

Our house didn't smell of smoke but there were nicotine stains everywhere....

We used a pre-paint priming product to get it off the unpainted ceiling woodwork and even that didn't do the trick. Repaint. That's all you can do....

A bucket of old fish next to the hot water tank in the airing cupboard will get rid of the fag smell easily.

Have to agree with others..not the fish though

Gut the room, carpets curtians etc then a fresh paint ..don't pay extra for those fancy shmancy paints..the cheapo's do the same

Any difficult areas a bit of warm water and carbonate of soda before paint

Get a decorator to quote you for the job for the whole house..get a quote also to re-carpet..then use the quotes as a barganing tool..then do it yourself..the decorating anyway

Chuck all the carpets and clean down the walls and woodwork with sugar soap.

or

Put a kipper in the airing cupboard
