Removing brake/shifter combo from Scott AT4

I am in the process of removing LX 7-speed shifters/brake from a Scott AT4 bar. I have pried the brake/shifter clamp quite a bit, but need to go more to get around the last bend near the bridge. Trying not to mare the black Scotts and not crack the LX clamp. Anyone know of any tricks to swing this?

I've gone through the same type of thing. Don't know if this is the way to do it, but it's how I did it.

Used a stack of thin washers (dimes will work too), to separate the clamp, without using more force than necessary, and it keeps it separated, till it slid through, also used a bit of wd-40 to make things slippery.

Glad I didn't have to bother with that, very often, as I'm sure there is a better way

I just took a hefty flat screwdriver to spread the clamp and simultaneously twisted the brake lever off....scratched the bar a bit but no big deal. obviously, the more you open up the clamp the less scratching.

I've used both of those techniques, above, to good effect. The only thing I'd add is that I 'rotated' the clamp off, rather than trying to pull it straight past the band - if that makes sense?

Backin the day, when I had a set of these, I ditched my shitmano brake lever/STI units in favour of thumbies and some Diacompe BMX levers (with a hinged clamp) and never got the problem again..

Also, I wouldn't worry about the lack finish too much, cos you'll be re-taping them up afterwards anyway, won't you?

Using a couple of washers under the screwdriver as I twisted the screwdriver to spread the clamp worked. Just needed a bit more spread. Just felt like I was reaching the shifter clamp point of maximum bend.

Tape them? I may do a partial tape at the main grip points. They do look nice taped up.

All the other AT 4s I have had were finished with a gray finish. These have a black finish. Anyone else have a black set?

exactly, the washers keep the increments small enough to keep from going past the point of no return, and also keep you from torquing on it back and forth, which weakens it. Glad it worked.

I've used them taped and bare...guess the taped were nicer, when riding without gloves, or in colder temps.

my 2 or 3 AT4-pro's that Ive owned have all been gunmetal finish, and the 2 AT-4's I've owned were black.

I always tape them, not just for comfort, but also a bit of protection, and even more importantly - grip. Wet bars = problems..
