Stumpy

C'mon - makes perfect sense. I always discard my bikes when the brakes need adjusting.

Doesn't everyone?

I dunno what's more amusing... A couple of blaggers grabbing someone's rig and flogging it on the bay, or the £450 bin...

Presumably they've got some form of evidence of reporting it to the police - worth asking if someone were interested in it.

Like that stumpy...but that's a silly price. £175 at the most imo...maybe slightly more if it's in excellent condition. If it's stolen, you would think it could be sold for a crack head price at the very least :P

I love the way they said that they thought they had better put it somewhere safe Yeah like in their shed... erm well someone would have been really upset if it had been stolen, they were just protecting it right

It's not so daft - you should see the road bike I found dumped off a bridge near my home a few weeks ago. The difference is that I took it to the Police (who made absolutely zero effort to reunite it with its owner) and was able to collect it a month later.

I think the seller may well be in good faith, after all they needn't have said any of this, but my understanding of the legal position is that the original owner may still be able to reclaim the bike if he comes forward.

The seller says he has no documentation from the police, he just made a note of the dates and times when he phoned them to report that he had the bike and then later when he phoned and they told him he could keep it. The weakness of his position compared to BenR is that he has no evidence that the bike had been abandoned - it was only there maybe 2 hours and it was in such a good state that after tightening a few cables he felt able to ask £450 for it.

I guess as far as the police are concerned, if they made a record of his report then they would have been in a position to tell the true owner where the bike was if the owner had reported it stolen. In both cases, the best evidence that the bike really was abandoned is perhaps that the true owner didn't go the police and report it lost/stolen.

Check out the Vogue Range Rover its propped up against..

Obviously very good at lifting and shifting.

I always wondered if a life of crime would pay more than running your own business

only reason to report a bike stolen is for an insurance claim on the home contents policy. same reson they have that 1 month calim period. if you report it stolen the police arnt gonna check any other juristictions so even if it was stolen from a couple of miles away they probably not gonna know about it.
for the sake of a few hundred, the insurance company aint gonna bother following it up so my guess is, if the story is true, it was nicked by the guy that abandoned it and the owner already has his insurance money.
the fact that the seller doesnt need to say any of this, to my mind, just makes it look like bs
