I think that dibs are handy in some situations. I've had to dib things before now, because I wanted to buy them but was unable to log onto Paypal to pay for them until after work, for example.

But, from a sellers point of view it can be pretty confusing. Especially when someone dibs something and doesn't contact you again, or when someone pm's you without dibbing.

I tend to allow dibs and I state on my listings that people are to dib on the thread, and then pm me once they've done so. This gives me the option to disregard anyone who hasn't read my thread properly, and who has just pm'd me without dibbing.

I hold dibs for 24 hours unless otherwise agreed. If someone hasn't paid up after 24 hours then the item is back up for sale.

The problem with dibs is it puts others off showing interest thinking the stuffs already sold.
I've sold the same set of alloys on another site 5 times now to dibbers, not one of them came though, others think they're sold and the thread slips off the page.
Cash is king.

+1.

I've seen stuff for sale before and a few people have dibbed so I go and buy off some one else.
Then a few days later they are back up at a reduced price because the people who dibbed pull out!!

That's not what I understand as "dibs". What you've done there is stated a definite intention to purchase with only the logistics of paying to sort out. In my book, "dibs" is "I'm interested in this but need to check frame size/shell width/size/phase of moon/read tea leaves/umm and aah" -- no actual commitment, merely a "I might buy this if...".

Nothing of true note to add to the debate, but would like to add a nod in agreement to the "discourages other buyers" argument.

I'm far from sure I buy into the concept or protocol of dibs, but if I'm reading a thread where people have claimed dibs, I leave well alone, I'm not about to become thoroughly and irredeemably British by joining a queue, nor am I about to keep a watchful eye on the situation.

Pragmatically, I chalk it up as sold, and rue my status as a dollar short, a day late.
