pretty sure it was covered but couldnt find it :?

whats peoples views on voting on/the new voting system?

i dont really see it as a problem if it gets voted in
as you can still just vote for one rather than a couple :?

Proportional representation makes so much sense. I just hope they get a chance to get the message over so enough people get off their arses and vote. The archaic first-past-the-post voting system needs to be updated.

For those that don't understand the basic principle of proportional representation I will try a little demo.

The current First-past-the-post voting system.

Candidate A - 20,000 votes
Candidate B - 16,000 votes
Candidate C - 7,000 votes

How many people did not vote for candidate A? Compare that to the number that did. PR gets around these peculiarities by allowing a second and third choice vote. If no candidate gets more than 50% of the first choice votes then second choice votes are counted and so on. The candidate that gets more than 50% of the votes wins. BTW I am not connected, or really support, any political party.

It's not PR -- it's AV.

If we replace FPTP with AV, we'll never get a clear majority of candidates to govern and we'll have coalition governments forever after -- just like Italy.

And that will ensure that the Lib Dems are always the "kingmakers", deciding who to partner with to form a government (which will depend on who bows down the most to Lib Dem demands).

No wonder the Lib Dems want AV.

so possibly a case of too much choice?

(similar to another post on here, with a video, where too much choice can often cause decision paralysis)

sorry for being thick but how does aAV work then?

have you not had the little referendum booklet in the post?

it works by having more than once on the voting ballot

i.e. you can number them from favourite to least favourite (or just your favourite one or two etc.)
then if no one holds more than half, the one with the least overall cards/votes, is disqualified, then the cards recounted (the second option is counted, then added accordingly)
does that make sense?

im slowly in favour for it, the only reason fptp doesnt work now, is that there are too many of us, simple, kill off about 90% of the people and you might get more variation, so AV is better for the smaller parties that get support on the fringe

But please people accept that the fringe/extreme parties will get more dominance - yep BNP and its opposites, so no complaining. Like what we heard about the euro parliament when BNP got there, everyone complained - dont hate the players, hate the system.
