My HP laptop mainboard has died after 6 years of sterling service, I need a few bits of information off the HDD, so I've just bought this:

2.5 IDE to USB HARD DRIVE CADDY HDD CASE ENCLOSURE

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 799wt_1165

1. Is this the right thing?

2. Will there be any problem accessing the information from the HD even though there is an XP operating system still on board

3. any hints & tips appreciated.

cheers - I just dont want to reload Itunes all over again if I can help it.

I'll use this caddy to plug into a car stereo later.

Without knowing exactly what you're trying to achieve (and having never messed around with or even used Itunes), it's hard to know if you'll have any issues... but I assume you're aware that running stuff that isn't installed under your current OS won't be easy? Ie you'd have to install Itunes 'properly' rather than just copying it over. Guess if it's just some kind of library file, it'll probably work... but like I said, I know nowt about that!

Interesting idea. Not looked into it, but do those usb car stereos support HDDs then? I've only ever seen them used with relatively small memory sticks.

An easy but laborious method of recovering Itunes is as follows (if all your music is stuck on your ipod):

1. DO NOT INSTALL ITUNES - make sure your pc does not have itunes installed.

2. plug in ipod - PC will see it as an external HDD

3. Copy all files to PC

3. install itunes, register it, authorise computer.

4. open both itunes and saved ipod data. Ipod data will be encrypted but will unencrypt when you 'drag & drop' the info from one to the other. Takes ages if you have alot of music but works in the end.

As far as I'm aware, USB headunits see HDD as big memory sticks.

You are wise, grasshopper. :P

It should be fine, unless the headunit is designed very badly.

If you've got the inclination, I bloody love my new touchscreen jukebox thingy. You can get the bits to make one for buttons these days.

There's no reason they couldn't support the size of a HDD - but I'd want to check they output enough power...

That's exactly the same case (apart from mine's blue) that I used when my old laptop died, no problems whatsoever, also handy to keep as an external hdd for backup/general guff.

The only thing you'll have to do is take ownership of your files again.

Log on as admin (you'll probably already be admin) on the new machine and and when you come across a folder you can't access you'll have to take ownership of it and its subfolders etc.

In my computer/explorer go tools > folder options > view > turn off simple file sharing.

Now when you right click on folder you can't access you'll have security options open to you and you can take ownership of the folder.

This gives you a more in depth guide.
