came to drill some holes in a wall last night, got 5 1/2 holes drilled before i gave up/realised my drill bits were f**ked and were coming out blunt, blackened and searingly hot.

i want to buy a decent set that wont break the bank, but will last at least more than my B&Q set of plastic drill bits.....

decent hammer drill and a quality branded set of bits will do it. Regularly withdraw and let the hammer action do the work rather that leaning too hard. I have an old corded Black and decker that comes out for the tougher stuff. Bosch bits.

My first one was not so good......

Re:

look for some nice, tip strengthened bits.
If they are over heating as your brick is hard then go slower and withdraw more often...

Going to fast will just damage the end from heat.

Hammering?

Yes, hammer setting is on, will try the more in and out approach and find some decent tip strengthened bits :)

I have to ask.
Are you sure the drill wasnt running in reverse ?

Actually im surprised you didnt get anywhere. Masonry drills arent sharp, its the hammer and rotary scraping action that drills the hole.

A trade set from screwfix will do the job.

An' pit yer back in tae it ya gurl

DeWalt makes some double pointed bits. I drill beach rocks lots for sculpture bases and use water as a coolent. Still running the same bit for a year and it's as good as new. You need the carbide tip bits for any masonry drilling. Bosch are good too.

lol, drill was running clockwise as it should (clockwise when stood behind) but i will double check as its got me thinking now! but the first couple of holes went fine, but as i moved further into the wall (i say wall, but its actually the old chimney breast - i think it is as its got the vent at the bottom/middle of the wall).

will see what B&Q hav to offer....
