recommend me a retrobike.....

I'd add to that by saying that slightly unfashionable ones are a good deal - as said good Marins are less fashionable than top drawer Konas, so are a bit more of a bargain.

1999 Konas (the first full range in Alu) seem to be very cheap, and seem to me to have all the handling of the steel ones, but less weight. They build up easily into 21lb machines as rigid singlespeeds using non-exotic components (I'm talking vanilla Deore and Sugino, not even XT).

Go Fat Chance!!

Worth an extra few quid IMO. A Wicked from 88-92 would be a great all dayer and very comfortable too. You won't lose money on it either

Specialized Stumjumper

Sorted geometry and tough to boot, maybe a bit everyman but nowt wrong with tried and tested

Not Marin as they're uncool

No they're not!

High end 90's steel Marins ride superbly.

A Pine mountain from the mid 90's would be a great option.

Honestly uncool! Don't believe the hype.

Okay, so maybe the early 90s Zolatone ones are okay :D

Honest, reliable, can do it all and comes with a long history.
late nineties steel rockhoppers are also good value, especially the last of the steel/nitanium ones.
regardless of brand or model, work out which ones float your boat then send out a messege on here that you would like to try one. I am sure somebody near to you would let you have a ride.

my Chute rode waaay better than I was expecting - it reminded me of when I first rode my Zaskar.

I'd recommend any steel Specialized if you've got arthritic bits as they are very twangy.

Got to be an Orange. Fact.

Got all the pingey feel you're after too! Go for a Clockwork imo although I may be biased.

Kona = bad.
