rear mechs

One more question - what's the this long cage short cage thing about? Are short cages used when you have close gearing on the rear cassette?

Though personally I would sort out a couple of Hope disc brake spacers between the jockey wheels with any nine speed rear mech running a 7spd rear cassette and chain, 9spd rear mechs are designed for narrower 9spd chains.

As I have also done with 9spd TA rings on some chainsets in 8spd set ups. (though not with disc brake washers)

SGS long cage - gives more chain length so can run a wider capacity of large/large and small/small sort of thing without the chain slapping around or snapping the chain on large large.

GS medium - cage are slightly lighter normally ;) look a bit neater and have greater clearance from the ground/twigs on the trail.

?? - short cage is for road bike or single /dual up front.

I cannot remember is a medium cage gave better shifting over long back in the day, think it was only slightly. As for now I doubt this is any difference.
