Ha! In the early 1990s we all ran short cage road mechs. I had an RD-1055 (the 105 mech with the shrouded "aero" cage) on my Cannondale M1000.
Advantages: lighter, crisper shifting, less likely to pick up twigs and other debris off-road.
Disadvantage: 30T is a push (28T is fine) and bad things will happen if you ever shift into big-big. But only a muppet would do that.
