I've just taken off my XT rear Mech 07 As i un-screwed it a spring came out with it!!!!! It was round the thread of the drop out. I'd never seen it before. When i changed mech last time. When i went fit the XT shadow it wouldn't fit!!! As the drop out hole is too big. Both mech fit my other frame drop out. But how do i get this spring back where came from. Has any body got any ideas. Seen this before?? This is my work bike so i've got the weekend to fix. The drop out is too big.
Please Any HELP :D :D

oh dear

is the dropout replacable?

as a quick and dirty fix, some really REALLY cheap derailleurs use a nut on the inside of the dropot to bolt to.

If the spring has come out of the Mech (assuming it's the one round the mech hanger bold) it sounds like the circlip that holds the mech bolt in has come off/broken. I've just spent an hour fighting with my M900 spring whilst fitting an SRP mech bolt. My fingers are sore, but it's in!!!

As for the new one not fitting I've no idea... didn't know there were multiple mech bolt sizes.... :?

The rear mech are both good. nothing wrong. I fitted them to the yellow frame with no problems. BUT Brent Trimble on the early frames has drilled the rear mech drop out bigger but 15 frames later (the yellow frame) its normal size.
I changed mechs before on this frame with no problems. The springs seems to makes the hole smaller so the mech can fit. But getting the spring back in is a   This a nightmare
Any ideas how to get the spring back in the hole??
The mech hanger is not replaceable

By "spring" do you mean the helicoil insert in the dropout? This can look a bit like a spring. Check the hole, does it appear the thread is now only half as deep? If the helicoil has been stripped it can be fixed, take it to local engineers and ask them to fit new helicoil insert for you. 2 minute job.

Yup.

That's a helicoil. I've no idea why it would be thaere as standard, but I guess you could use it to strengthen the hanger threads on an alloy frame.

You'd usually use them to repair stripped theads and mismyfat's right, pop down the local engineers- they'll be able to fit a new one, but not 'til Monday now! :?

The dropout is alumininum i presume? Alloy is not strong enough to just tap out and put a steel bolt in. If you then tightened the bolt it would just strip the thread, the helicoil is steel so they tap the hole out larger to suit the insert (which is why you said the mech bolt no longer fits the hole). The bolt is then in a much stronger steel thread.

Cherrybomb you going to cannock 30th dec?

Thanks chaps. Just chatted to the company is Liverpool. about it. Looks like i need a M8 Helicoil kit. As at some time the thread had been stripped and fixed. No problems till i unscrewed it.
Now to find a London area place.
