Rear derailleur set-up question?!

I have little experience with derailleur's especially on old bikes. I have just refitted the derailleur to my falcon racer and it works (well kinda, little bit sloppy) but it just doesn't look like its sitting right. If i where to take the wheel off the derailleur would just drop off!

If i bolt it on the other side it seems to close to the cogs, think i'm being a dumb ass here

What am i missing here? Could anybody help me :?

Also can you still get gear cable with these end bits? is it the same as your bog standard gear cable from chainreaction?

the bolt on the mech hanger (now at the 6 o clock position) needs to go into the drop out behind the axle

The hanger bracket for the derailleur usually has a screw which will fit either into one of the mudguard/rack eyes, or into a hole in the dropout itself, with the slot in the hanger lining up with the dropout.
