Rear cassette

Can I replace the rear six speed cassette on my '87 Raleigh Triathlon easy enough from a normal cycle store? The freewheel mechinism feels like the bearings have had it and I've read that it isn't worth stripping and changing the them.

If it's a cassette (where the ratchet mechanism's in the hub and the sprockets slide on to it with a lockring to make it all stay put) then you might struggle. If it's a freewheel (where the whole assembly including ratchet part screws on to the hub), way easier. A good few mail order houses and no doubt a decent LBS should still be able to sell you a 6sp. Shimano-compatible screw-on freewheel.

Thanks for your reply, how will I know which one it is, I didn't consider that the freewheel might be in the hub but now it seems obvious. It didn't look like it was in the hub though, their was a sort of seal which was damaged which seemed to be part of the gear cluster and then the wheel spindle, Now I know that it could be either it may become more obvious on closer inspection. Ta.

if it still has its original wheels on then the triathlon came with a shimano 105 freehub. and as said above remove locking 'sprocket' (cog number 6) using two chain whips and then they all slide off leaving the freehub in place. changing cassette will have no change on bearings .

Cheers for that, it explains it nicely, a replacement wheel seems to be the best option.

theres a few 105 hubs on fleabay atm

depending on your build and condition of...heres a new one.. his claims of it being unused seem to be true

Is the depth of the free wheel hub the same and the later cassettes put together with slimmer gears to allow more of them?
