Ready for something rare?

I was thinking it's rare because it's made of unobtainium so I did a little search and found out they didn't know what they did at Univega either.
Aparently it's why they dropped the whole Boralyn / Boralite.

From the Interweebz, so it must be true.

I had a Boralyn as well as a Boralite.
They both broke. It was explained to me by someone at Univega who was knowledgeable about the mfg. process that when the aluminum (the matrix) was molten, the ceramic filler (B4C, or something) would begin to float toward the top of the melt.

If they didn't maintain agitation and extrude the tubing soon enough, the dispersion of the ceramic would become uncontrollably inconsistent resulting in very brittle areas in the frame tubes.
I guess they never solved that problem. Maybe in the future they'll conduct that process in the low gravity of an orbiting space factory.
That last bit made me giggle.

Just before you guys start to wonder, I'm an Univega Alpina Fan and the Boralyn was some kind of dream bike BITD when i was young.
I've got the first frame a while ago but this turned out to be too large for me, than there was a frame damaged by an accident in the woods for cheap money available, so I've simply bought this one, proofing that the smaller size would fit much better for me.
Finally I came across another good one the smaller size. I had to buy this.
Just a few other Bikes are in front of the big queue of projects and overhauls I'm allways planning and re-planning.
So I will definitly build once a Boralyn bike.
The other two frames can move on, just in case someone needs a 20" Boralyn frame in good condition, or a 17" with a hole in the down tube (but other than that also fine, maybe still good to go as a pup bike) just let me know.

just FYI: not sure on the story, the knowledge about Boralyn was anyhow not at Univega, but it has been manufactured by the US company Alyn Corp.

Yes, definitively a few frames broke. But not sure about overall number, nor the ration vs. sold ones in total.
Still most bike fans just recall this.
I'm wondering if the bad durability was the only reason why the production of Boralyn bike frames and the Univeage Borayln model was stopped so quickly again.
Maybe there are also some other factors, not sure about costs, margin or volume of sales. Maybe this was also just a test balloon or to polish their image and cross-financed in hope of better sales of their volume models. And as the press jumped on some broken frames, they stopped it to not cause any image damage.
I think we won't be able to find out the truth.
