raliegh magnum 1979

Hi all,
This is my first post (scary)

I am embarking on my first restoration project, I have brought locally from me a 1979 raliegh magnum frame only (less forks) from a cycling charity / repair shop.

I wish to be as sympathetic as possible to this great looking old bike (attached pic) use original or at least same year parts to convert this into a single speed.

I've bought raliegh history books and done alot surfing so far to date the bike, I've found a company in Australia who will make all the decals, but now I am stuck I cant find anymore history on the bike or the original spec anywhere. I am guessing it wasn't a popular model.

I will do as reading as possible to see if I can anything more about it, in short I know it's age and factory but nothing else, it looked sad covered in dust on the floor of a workshop and I felt compelled to give it some more miles!! Call me an old romantic or maybe just stupid

Can anyone help me on anything more than the picture attached, I know how it looked but struggling on how i get it back.
I am searching for a dona bike of the same year to make some start...........

Any help is greatly appreciated and I would love to share my links and usefull companies I've found so far and thought out thid project

Paul

Hi. Looks like a Raleigh badged Carlton corsair for export. Have a google for Carlton corsair 1978 and see what you think. Shaun

As osgm said, it looks very much like the Carlton Cosair. Similar colour and markings as the 1978 one I've just sold. Nice bike

Different frame though.

didnt the corsair have some 531 in it - prob only main tubes? The raleigh looks a bit hi-ten type tubing.

The only common bit is brown, but that was a late 70's colour ... remember the brown or mustard allegos and triumphs?

Hi, I've owned one of these since 1987. Mine was a 1979 model identical to the one in your picture but has since been resprayed. I may be able to help you with original spec.

It is a low spec model, but I would say ideal for a first project, especially a single speed.

The frame tubing is Raleigh/TI industries 18-23 hi tensile steel. ( I call mine my 'gas pipe Raleigh', but I don't dislike it, it is tough.) The bottom bracket and forks will be Raleigh thread (26tpi). You might struggle to find the right BB and headset. Maybe go for threadless.

Chainset is a Raleigh branded Sakae SR double (52/42), with a chainring guard.
Front derailleur is a Shimano Altus LT.
Not sure about rear derailleur, mine had been replaced with a Sachs Huret before I got it.
Brakes are Raleigh branded Weinmann 610/750 centre pulls, with Diacompe "suicide" levers.
Shift levers are Sachs Huret stem mounted.
Wheels were Chromalux 27" rims on Atom hubs, but mine rusted away years ago. Rear had a 5-speed Shimano freewheel.

Hope this is some help to you.

Bruce
