Raleigh Ti frame with repair

The seller says it’s had a weld repair but doesn’t mention the hole. That shouldn’t be there surely?

Not sure that looks like a carefully placed, suitably sized, reinforced and carefully finished hole to reduce stress concentration - possibly more like it was too hard to get the torch and rod in?


I'd ride it if it was mine but I wouldn't be surprised when it broke again.

Looks some way from the weld area for joining tubes. Crack repair where the welder burned through?

I'm surprised the repairer didn't have a go at filling the hole.

I mean, if you're given a frame with a crack to repair, and you hand it back saying "yeah, I repaired the crack - it's got a hole instead now. Hope that's ok. £150 please."

Did raleigh do such hi spec ti welding?
Many raleigh welded ti frames look like I did it tbh.
I think nearly every one I've seen has broken too

On a sample of one, the welding on mine (MTB) 'looks' immaculate and is never going to crack!

Like most things Raleigh I think they achieved a fair balance between cost and performance when you escape the gas pipe / fashion bikes.

It appears they worked with a few accomplished companies and made reasonable investments to develop and build ti frames - be interesting to compare failure rates to the higher end builders of the period for sure.

I can't believe that raleigh had ti welding facilities in their factory at this point, fit such small scale production, so in assuming they had them made by someone else, like Orange did
