Raleigh SBDU frame disguised as a Brian Rourke

Hi Rob

I'm glad to see you've asked your questions on the Yahoo SBDU group and are receiving some positive responses. The images you put on the group show a Cinelli shell so you almost certainly have a 753 frame. Weigh it and see if it is between 1800 and 1900 grams. Some frames were built for other builders, yellow may have been the original colour but after 30 years, it is impossible to say what has happened and if yellow was original.

As others on the Yahoo group have said, as I did above, because of the concealed top tube cable, you are probably looking at some kind of renovation work and respray in the past.

Cheers
Neil

Given that I visited Ilkeston on a number of occasions I am aware that they did not do everything by the book - Mike Mullet had left the SBDU by the time I visited (at the suggestion of the Raleigh Board)

.

I think that it would be a sensible course of action, if you refrain from making personal comments about others, in such a way that they might be viewed in an unfavourable way. Mike is a (highly respected) member of the TI Raleigh forum; many members of that forum also visit this one and might share your comments. To make derogatory comments on a public forum such as this, is to leave oneself open to litigation.

Oh yes, his surname is Mullett, not Mullet.

Just trying to be helpful.

Perhaps you would like to explain where I have made a personal or derogatory comment? That Mike Mullett had left the SBDU by the time I had visited is very simply a fact*, and I'll reiterate, my visit was suggested by Raleigh management.

Rk.

*I am sure Mike, as he is a personal friend of yours, will confirm his dates at Ilkeston.

Re:

Re read your post RK, I suspect like others, I read it that you were suggesting Mike Mullett had left Raleigh at the suggestion of the Board of Directors.

Firstly, if that had been my intention then the comment in brackets would have appeared after the name in question not at the end.

To be very clear if that is something I wanted to mention, which I would not, I would have had the facts to justify the comment. Therefore there would be no issue of litigation (as the quick-to-criticise poster suggests) as it would be a fact and beyond dispute.

So to avoid further misunderstanding, by the time I was conducting business with Raleigh senior management, and had visited Ilkeston, the person mentioned was no longer with the SBDU.

Finally, it was Raleigh senior management (at Nottingham) that suggested I visit the SBDU at Ilkeston to meet the team there.

I have written extensively (elsewhere) on this subject and there has never been any misunderstanding.

Rk.

I was watching the auction as it looked like a Raleigh except for the internal cable routing, I suspect that was done when it was repainted.
The serial number dates it to 1985.
Difficult to know what colour it would have been as the buyer could choose, at the time the Blue/White Panasonic was the most popular.

Thanks it will be on eBay again later this month

I tend to keep track of eBay sales so it will be interesting to see what it goes for.
The normal pattern is that Red/Black/Yellow ones go for big money, especially new repaints (sometimes regardless of the quality of the work) and non standard schemes/old repaints really struggle.
It's a bit of a catch 22 because the cost of a repaint into Red/Black/Yellow will probably be the same (or more) as the increase in resale value.
Having said that one R/B/Y version went for crazy money on Sunday, though whether the buyer actually pays will be interesting to see.
Strangely the same frame had 'sold' a couple of weeks earlier for big money but re-appeared, presumably because that buyer didn't pay.

Yep, I've been watching that same frame. Sold a few weeks ago for over £400 which is a good price, then appeared a few weeks later with the same seller and sold for over £700 - highest I've seen one sell on eBay. Normally selling price is about 250 - 400 for old TI-Raleigh colour, the 700 was very high (someone must have really wanted it).
