Raleigh Corsa Panasonic Restore - Cassette

Hey there guys

Been browsing these forums for a while, but have now registered :-)

I'm restoring a 1980s Raleigh Corsa in Panasonic Colours and i've got a question that someone who knows loads more about bike than me will know!

Its got 501 Reynolds frame, the vast majority of the components are original (apart from the seat!)

On the rear wheel, the cone nut had very bad marks on the ball bearing track, so I had to replace it, and now the wheel spins nicely. However, i've noticed that where the ball bearings run on the inside of the cassette/freewheel (the other side), there are some minor marks as well so i'd ideally like to replace that.

I'm just wondering, how do I get it out, and what would I need to replace it with? I can't seem to find anything like it online, but I imagine i'm looking in the wrong place?

I'm guessing on the rear of the cassette thats a lock ring that I'd have to remove and it comes out?
The cassette is fairly worn as well, so this may need to be replaced :-)

Any help is greatly appreciated. I'll start a thread detailing my progress as well, but i'm almost there, so will do a retrospective thread!

Hi, and welcome. It looks like you have a cassette, probably 6speed but can't tell from your pic. You've probably used a large allen key to remove that from the hub. The sprockets actually come off that central 'cassette body'.

Fasten it back onto the hub. You will need 2 chain wrenches. Use one chain wrench to hold the large sprocket and use the 2nd wrench to undo the small sprocket - it is the small sprocket that holds everything onto the cassette body. Have a look here http://sheldonbrown.com/k7.html#uniglide

Yes, it's a Uniglide free hub (I have a Corsa as well)

To answer lycrake's question, you will find it difficult to replace a Shimano Uniglide Freehub, so you might want to look at a replacement Hyperglide Freehub and new cassette (sprockets to some people!) This will probably be the cheaper option.

I'm currently faced with a similar dilemma as the free hub on my Corsa is making noises that it shouldn't!

Great, thanks for those replies. Really helpful... Yes its a 6 speed.

I think the best option would be to get a new freehub body and a new cassette that fits onto it.

Would something like this be right?

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Shimano-Alivio- ... no+freehub

How would I know this would fit onto the rear wheels hub properly? (it seems to have 10 splines)

And then I'd buy a suitable 6 speed cassette that goes onto this?

Thanks

From my experience Shimano free hub's have a universal fitting, so the one you link to should be fine (I bought this exact one for a Shimano RX100 hub that previously had a Uniglide Freehub on, and then bought a new cassette and spaced it because I only needed 6 speeds)

I bought direct from Woolyhatshop, rather than amazon and it arrived within 48 hours!

6 Speed Shimano cassette's are somewhat rare though, and you will probably struggle to find one finished in silver. A 7 speed 'may' work, but you'll probably have to check velobase (http://www.velobase.com) or Disraeli gears (http://www.disraeligears.co.uk) to check if a Shimano 105 Golden Arrow rear mech has the 'throw' to operate over 7 speeds.

Great, thanks for that. Have bought a hub and 7 speed cassette from WHS via Amazon! Will fit them and let you know how I get on :-)

Hey there chaps

So I ordered the cassette and freehub. They both fit together which is great, but i’ve got a couple of problems…. (see images attached)

1. I’ve tried to put the free hub onto my rear wheel hub, and it doesn’t seem to fit, but it looks like it should do…! I’ve managed to get it on mostly (I think!) but it doesn’t seem to go all the way down. Have I bought the wrong fitting?

2. With the hub mostly on, I fitted it all back together, and it looks like the axle is now massively too short. The cone nut screws on, but the washer, and final bolt won’t go on, it looks to be about 10mm to short!

Do I need a new axle, or am I doing something massively wrong?

The freehub should push onto the hub and locate into it before you screw the 10mm allen key inside in..

It looks like this hasn't happened
