Raleigh Chill - any good ?

I may be in a position to buy the following bike:

It's the only photo I've got, but have been told the bike is in mint condition, hardly used.

Basically, I like the colour, and do remember them from 20 years back, and thought they looked pretty nice. So I'm tempted.

It's a 21" frame, which sounds a bit large for me (I'm 6ft) but then some of the Raleigh USA frames weren't really into the whole 'sloping top tube' thing were they, so perhaps this isn't all that big. I mean, some MTBs 20 years back still had horizontal top tubes, although my '89 Explosif certainly didn't !

Can anyone say what height of person this bike is designed for, and whether it's a worthy investment. I mean, how much would you guys pay for this ?

at 20" and you 6' you'll be fine ,nice and comfy

Problem is, like most people, I'm skint, it's nearly Christmas, I'm too busy, and I really don't need another bike.

And my wife would kill me !

The other reason I'm asking here is that if I don't buy it, then maybe another retrobike member would like to. If it was nearer to me, I'd just buy it, and sell it on. I wouldn't lose any money, that's for sure. I just don't have time...

it's very heavy and the setup is more than poor...

you must know that only the framekit is nice...

I bought it for a friend as a commuter and therefore it is a very nice ride...

we paid 60€ and that was no cent too cheap!

but I like the technium series and that's why I bought it though the brakeset+ levers,shifting, etc. is really crap !!!

Errr, the original Chill in the UK was specced with full Deore DX, far from crap IMO, add that to a Easton Alloy Bonded frame with cro-mo rear triangle and you get a pretty nice bike IMO.
I guess that someone had stripped the DX off the bike you brought.

brakes were 200gs and I was not able to brake, cause the levers are so big,that I couldn't reach it (I got small hands )

Nope it's a Chill (1990 I think) UK spec, brakes are wide profile DX Canti's.

That Obsession has the same colourway as the 1990 Chill.

Hmmm, you've made a damn good point there. The bike in the photo even has the reflectors like the Obsession in the catalogue, whereas the higher up models don't. And also, there are no Tange BigForks on it, which again doesn't match the Chill in the catalogue.

But the weird thing is, the person selling this bike knows absolutely nothing about bikes, so I'm wondering where on earth he got the name 'Chill' from. I'll have to ask him for more info.

If it is a genuine Chill, then it should have DX, and therefore would be decent.

I'll try and find out more then.
