Raleigh Activator

Well have spent a small fortune on the Activator 2 :). Still have an issue that I cannot sort - the front suspension.

I removed the suspension fork unit that was with the bike and popped into my local Halford who promptly sold me a 1 1/8 unit, oddly that did not fit. So bit of investigation and determined that the old unit is a 1", 200mm threaded unit. Well off I go to replace it and think might as well get a new 1" threaded headset as well. All the bits have arrived and time to learn a new lesson - measure the head tube OD before buying new forks and headset :? Done that now and reckon the head tube is 1.5", new headset is too small.

My new hobby is collecting different sized headsets, 2 to date a 1 1/8 and a 1".

I need help, can I use the new 1" forks with a 1.5" headset if I can get one? I am guessing that the thread on the forks will be different to that on the headset adjustable race and locknut.

I know it is completely irrational to continue with this but then most hobbies are a bit mad.

Pretty sure that'll be a 1" headset - defo not 1.5". You said 1.5" OD - the headset cups go inside... :?

You'll almost certainly have/need a 1" steerer on the fork (this should be easy enough to measure on the original fork), so the headset will screw onto this and the headset cups are press-fitted into the frame, which will have an ID around 1 1/8" for a 1" headset (confusing, but the measurement you go from is the fork steerer, so a headset to suit a one inch steerer - a one inch headset - presses into a headtube that obviously has to be a bit bigger).

Hope that made it clearer, not worse :?

You'll need a shop to fit the headset really, unless you're a pretty handy bodger. Funnily enough that's exactly what I plan to do right now!
