All the repairs are done. Paul Brodie did all the work. He said it was the most
work he had ever done to repair a frame. But i feel this one was worth the effort.
This frame is one of the nine Offroad Toad Horny Toads made by Chris Dekerf.
For Toad fans this is a holy grail bike. For e-stay fans it can be considered to
be top of the food chain. Up there with Mantis and Yeti. IMHO of course.
I first found out about this frame at Harald's show 2013 when i overheard a
couple guys talking. Guy says to his friend `I have one of these'. Of course I
turned around to see what he was referring to. They were standing in front of
Rod Kirkham's Horny Toad. I walked up and joined the conversation. He told me
it was broken. No worries, they all supposedly broke. I gave him my contact info
and off he went. We crossed paths the odd time and i always asked about the frame.
He would tell me that when he decided to let it go that it would be mine. Years passed,
I still saw him but stopped asking about it. We'd say hi and carry on.
Then one day back in May i came home from work and there was the message.
Selling my Toad if you are still interested. Called back and made arrangements
to see it. When he brought it out i was very excited but then i saw the condition.
It was broken in to two pieces and held together with black electricians tape
and had numerous dents on stays. But it was a Horny Toad. Something was different
about this one. I realized that it didn't conform to what i was familiar with. All the
other Horny Toads I'd seen were similar to the early fillet brazed Toads. This one
was tig welded and had the ovalized down tube with bolt on aluminum drop outs
like the second generation Toads. There was no way I was leaving without it.
Still research to be done. But this might be one of one, of the nine. Could possibly be
the last of the Horny Toads made as well. All speculation at this point. Need to talk
to Chris Dekerf and Rod eventually.
So here it is, some before and after repair pictures and as it is now.
I have decided to wait on paint. Build it and ride it a few times till the
end of this season to see how the repairs hold out before i spend any
more on it for paint. If it doesn't break and the repairs hold then will
have it finished for spring next year. What are your thoughts on it?
