Racing a retro

I raced only on my '97 Mantra this summer, and did quite well (always top 10, and even one 3rd place finish).

The look on people's faces as you fly by on an old bike is priceless.

I would've continued to stay on that bike for future racing if it hadn't self destructed. Now I've joined the ranks of "new" bike racers.

I'm building a retro Merlin to race on next year. The only thing I would never do is race on retro tires. I've got some Rocket Rons, which I'll make tubeless for low pressure riding. 50/60 mm of travel will do for me, and correct adjusted cantis with good pads work good enough too!

Goal is to go under 10kg, for my own mental advantage
Really looking forward to be in a race on a retro bike for the first time...

The last race I did (there's 4 years ago) was with my klein attitude. I was perhaps the only racer with a full rigid bike.
I didn't care for winning or not, but I thought I did all holeshot, in every starts

I had a Klein Attitude about 4 years ago, a 1991 with xtr cantis, xtr wheels, all old school, it was a green one, all green not tri-colour with one piece bar and stem and rigid forks.

I turned up at a "flat" xc mtb race, my team kit is red and white, I wore a skin suit with shaved legs. I clashed badly with the bike

At the start i got the usual p155 taking etc, all good banter.

They all where quite at the end when I won :P

It rattled me to death though and my shoulders where more cooked than my legs. Wish i never sold it !!!!

I've raced the Amplifier 5 times this year & in every race somebody has said 'That's the coolest bike here!' - makes you feel great about racing retro.

Do it!! :D
