If only it fitted Alu forks I wouldn't mind this, go nice on the bike.
22.2mm wedge, that would be a 1" steel steerer fit might have to go measure it it'll squeeze in or not.

Could this not be used with a SFN? Or would it detract too much from the original design?

if this is the quill style, that home-made shim wouldn't be there. if that's the case this stem could/should be for an alum steerer i would think.

the later versions of the stem, it used and expanding clamp and you would swap the appropriate size steel or alum innards to get it to work.
