Race Face LP/Turbine LP with single ring (SS question)

These didn't seem to mind...

I've run mine as a 2x9 and as a single ring (Rohloff on the back) without bolts in the granny holes. I did wonder if they were structural, but I haven't had any problems leaving them out.

On the Rohloff bike the chainring was on the outer position to get the correct chainline, but a 32 should work fine either side assuming a standard bottom bracket length.

If anyone has the 'official word' from Race Face regarding the chainring bolt as being somehow structural, then I'd like to see it. Otherwise I call BS. 8) I have the original documentation from all four sets of Race Face cranks that I own and none of them says anything about the bolts being necessary.

links below are not exactly authoritative, but one contains a claimed email from RF saying "We feel that installing a reinforcement ring or granny ring will increase the strength of the spider. Installing granny bolts alone most likely will not have a large impact. Having granny ring bolts installed is not a requirement of warranty on Turbine LP cranks."

it's your shins. i ran for 18mos or so without, but have since installed them (without a granny ring). can't hurt.

I picked up a set of Atlas cranks and they have a (4 bolt) granny spider adaptor that the granny attached to, very similar to the old DH reinforcement ring.

I can certainly see that the granny ring itself would add strength to the spider, but I think chainrings alone are only a solution for your piece of mind...not much of a concern anyway because IMO Race Face cranks are great.

RF is up front aboutt he bolts not being the solution, but the ring itself. The important thing is to check your cranks. These Turbines aren't getting any younger!

We feel that installing a reinforcement ring or granny ring will increase the strength of the spider. Installing granny bolts alone most likely will not have a large impact. Having granny ring bolts installed is not a requirement of warranty on Turbine LP cranks. Our old Turbine DH cranks came with an aluminum reinforcement ring, it would most likely help in this situation. Unfortunately we no-longer manufacture or stock the reinforcement rings, they may be available in a secondary marketplace.

Also please note that bicycle components should be visually inspected on a regular basis for any cracks or fractures. There's a chance that the Turbine LP cranks pictured may have been cracked before the product failed. Sometimes these hairline cracks can be very difficult to detect, however for your own personal safety and well being we recommend carefully inspecting your components. Thanks for your email.

I've RF Turbines on the Bonty. Mounted on the middle with SS specific bolts. Works no problem. I haven't got any close up pics, but they can be arranged if you want.

Thanks....I'll take you up on the pix offer as soon as I've found myself some Turbines (in red...in case you happen across any  ).

What ring/cog ratio you got there?

Nicely turned out bike chap :)
