did the springs used to break on these? they seem to be sold fairly frequently minus springs...

Maybe. Like you note, there seems to be a lot of these brakes out there without springs, so could be something else too.

I love these brakes, they work well although a bit of a bitch to set up. Had a pair bitd and recently got two pairs on the 'bay for 30 quid, including the springs. They're on the CX bike.

This is the taiwanese version - different springs than rollercams or the us made cantis.
