:?: Question About my GT 'Psyclone' Frame...

OCD

Retro Newbie
Greetings...

OK, so I am by no means a MTB collector or fanatic, but in 1999 I ended up with complete GT Psyclone that I picked up locally from the classifieds. At the time I was more interested in the components it came with, (Marzocchi Z2 fork and XTR crank + shift!) as I was in the process of building a bike to ride from school and work. At 19 inches the bike was much too big for me anyhow, so after stripping it down, the frame was hung in my garage gathering dust for the next 8 years.

Earlier this week I was clearing some space for storage and thought maybe it was time to clear out the remnants of hobbies past, so I decided all of my old bike stuff will be the first to go. As my usual selling routine goes, I try to do a little research before pricing, but the frame is a bit of a mystery. So far the only real mention I can find on the internet seems to be in this particular forum. Are Psyclones considered desirable amongst collectors? Is there somewhere I can find more factory info and specs? How can I determine what year it was made?

I know there is something special about this frame based on what the original owner had told me at the time; He seemed sad to let it go and told me how it was given to him by a friend that owned a bike shop in Colorado. He also said it was considered a 'team bike' and was hand made in limited numbers. I would tend to believe this based on my own observations: It's made of steel but the welds are as smooth as the joins on a carbon frame and it's painted in colors that closely resemble the team jerseys in the mid '90s.

Anyone have some info or resources they could share with me? I just want to sell it, but with the supposed 'history' it comes with, I'd like to make sure it ends up in the right hands!

Cheers,
-Steve

The Psyclone was GTs top end fillet brased steel frame. I have a feeling the last year it was available was about '95 but I'm not sure.

Very nice bit of kit. some photos would help folk date it better.

Wow that was fast, thanks guys!

Yes, pictures will be coming later this evening.

I perused the catalogs, but didn't see anything that matched my frame exactly. All of the Psyclones pictures appear to be yellow only, but my frame sports the blue and yellow 'team' colors, similar to the pattern on the '93 Bravado.

Can these frames be dated via serial #?

they can be dated by decal styles. psyclones were built to order, so custom paint isnt entirely unlikely.

Oh, I see.. I think I'm going to need some help identifying this!

I'll take some pics of the decals as well.

I had the same model...

Hey matey, think the frame you have was the exact one i ordered up in 92-93....
They were shown in the brochure that year in red and also in yellow..Mine arrived in team colours yellow & blue...

They were hand made in CALIFORNIA in limited numbers and were painted in DU-PONT imron paint

Hope this helps? Quite a rare old bike :D Ridden by team GT rider JIMI KILLEN think was the name??

Enjoy and if you do decide to sell  PM me 8)

"if you do decide to sell"

It's definitely for sale. :)

More info:

Made of Tru Temper GTX Ultra III - Double Butted, Made in the USA. No indication whether it was California or Colorado.

The Psyclone decals are black with a red and white outline.

Cables are routed on the outside.

Pictures to follow.

:D Psyclones...bought mine in 2000, it was a '99 frame...sponsered by GT at the time.. ( ..triathlon-not MTB!)..and it cost me £200.00; retail was 700.00
As far as i know only around 200 have ever been built. As far as value goes...its all in the eye of the beholder!!!
The frame number..btm bracket area..should give the No. of the frame and the last 2 digits, the year of manufacture 8)
