[Q] How to make 1" steerer forks fit in 1" 1/8 fra

Quibble

Retro Newbie
OK – simple question but I fear not a simple answer!!

Since starting to buy bits and bobs for my retro build, I’ve had a slight change of direction. So I now have a ’95 Marin Team Ti frame which currently has a headset, stem etc. for 1” 1/8. However, as part of my previous build, I have some Pace RC38 Airforce IIs with 1” steerer.

What is the best / easiest way to make the two work?? I think the Pace’s will be extremely well suited to the Marin frame – not too much travel, light weight, look good etc. etc. I just don’t have the technical nouse to do it.

Help me!!!!!! (thank you!! ;-)

Chris king (and others) do headsets that fit an 1-1/8" headtube, but take a 1" fork.

Alternatively youcould get some inserts for the headtube, that will enable you to run 1" headset.

You could shim the steerer tube possbly? although you might want to check that with a Pace expert?

If you're currently running a headset and threded forks/quill stem, you may possibly need to hunt down an appropriate ahead stem..
, but of course you'll also need to check that the steerer tube is long enough for all of this.?

Hope that helps?

Thank you - I think that going down this road and changing the stem sounds like the easiest plan!!

cool.. 8)

I don't know my Pace forks all that well, but if the RC38's (you have) are easy to dismantle, you might be able to get replacement crown+steerer in 1-1/8" but like I say I'm not too clued up on them..

Reducer shims in the frame is the best way to do this.

I may even have some you can have for postage somewhere.

you should be able to get a 1"1/8th steerer for those Pace forks, I recently got a new steerer for my RC38's from Tim @ Fork English (member "justbackdated" on here). He'll be able to advise you.

Not sure I'll be able to get a replacement steerer - it would appear that the steerer is some kind of push fit / interference fit (rather than some forks that seem to be bolted!)

Edit: Ahh... I remember the Airforce 2's did have a different crown to the earlier ones now.

perhaps headset reducers would be the way to go then?

If the steerer is removable you could always swap it for my 1/1/8 steerer as I need a 1" one for my RC36's.

Would love to help (as it would solve a problem for both of us!!), but unfortunately the steerer isn't removable.

Other than the Chris King Devolution thingy, anyone know of any other headsets to allow me to place a headset in my 1" 1/8 frame and use my 1" steerer? (sorry for the basic questions but trying to fit things in the wrong size hole is new too me!!!)
