Being Retro, the only bikes that I like in his shop are the ones
up on the display shelves with the soft tyres!! :D I have to take the TVT - nothing else will do, I'm afraid ..
I can appreciate where you are coming from, but its a chance to try something new. A chance to see if modern carbon really is better than a bike from BITD ..... or is that what you are afraid of [ lol ]..... the possibility of concluding that modern may have a performance advantage. And the opportunity would cost you nothing, with other fringe benefits.

Re: Re:

Honestly, with the legs I have on me these days, performance isn't even a consideration!! I find modern bikes hellishly ugly, over-designed and would never consider riding one, let alone owning one.
It's a bit like saying, "You may have a Lamborghini Countach but you should really think about trying one of the new ones as it will handle better and outperform the old thing . . "

These photos sum up the difference between modern and classic for me - I'm sorry - as far as me owning a new bike goes - it's never going to happen!! It's about what you find aesthetically pleasing as much as anything at my age. When you're 21 and racing you want all the modern technology you can afford to beat the next guy. As I creep towards 50, I really don't care any longer! It's not about giving up, it's about enjoyment of the bike. At 21 I was too busy trying to beat everyone around me to really enjoy the bike. These days it's a whole new experience and I'm loving every mile of it. 8)

Many of us on this forum were lucky enough to have been at their peak when some of the most beautiful bikes ever created were being produced by the likes of Colnago, Bianchi, Cinelli, TVT and Raleigh.

These days, I can ride along and inevitably get overtaken and thrashed by an emaciated young buck that flies by on his anaphylactic-looking plastic bike, sporting ship's steering wheels and liquorice tyres, but I'll always be a happy man knowing that I have something worth looking at and enjoying between my legs!!

Vive le Retro!!

:xmas-wink:

Except the countach was, by all accounts, a piece of shit.
Whereas modern bikes (up to a point) are all but indistinguishable from retros once you throw a leg over them.

Re:

The Lambo example is a bad one, as you are comparing apples to oranges, ie you slate the Lambo when compared to your modern Ford (or whatever) - wholesome different beasts in terms of what we use a car for.

Your TVT is at least comparable to a modern carbon as (a) they are both state of the art racing bikes (for their day) and (b) they both only carry one person who has to pedal the bugger.

A better comparison might be a supercar from both eras or a family car from both eras.

If you simply don't like modern, that's fair enough, we ride what we like. But I, as 50 odd year old, am happy to let some young buck whizz past me, with no intentions to chase, I am mindful that I need all the help I can get.

Aesthetically, I prefer steel retro, but with our terrain and my weight, I ride modern. I'd rather sell my soul and enjoy more rewarding rides that doggedly stick with steel and ride short, flat rides.

We are already planning for next year's Majorca trip and am tempted to try Carbon Cosmics on my hire bike because ... well I can

Re:

Is this the Retrobike forum or the Thread Drift Forum?!

If you feel the need to promote modern equipment, then I'm sure that there are plenty of other places on the internet where you can get folk to agree with you. I, for one, will never be one of them hence my contributions to the Retrobike Forum!!

Dear oh dear . .

This is a retro site devoted to all things past but it does nod to the present now and again.

The Countach is aesthetically more pleasing than the car below despite the former being terrible to drive. It looked futuristic when new and aged pretty well

The same can be said of bicycles - but, a new bike isnt much to look at but is nicer to ride if you want to go fast, faster, FASTER DAMN YOU!

Most just want to tootle and pootle and the retro side allows for this just as efficiently as the FASTER PUSSYCAT FASTER brigade, just at differing speeds and goals.

I'd rather have the old over the new and suffer the indignities of the Countach but the commute will be in something bland and efficient.
