PS3 (almost) hacked!

allow people to install other operating systems on their console and play homemade games

Like a PC then

I'm actually very happy there are people doing this kind of stuff , I'm sick of electronic items being limited . If you've payed your money you own the fookin thing so you should be able to do what you like with it .

yes i agree but if they werent limited then companies like sony woudnt make money, as an example, i bet the military get super laptops/pc's which arent available to the public (yet), they will release one which is a bit better year after year, not as they develop it. its a con really, but yes the ps3 is very limited in my eyes as its not even backwards compatible i.e. wont play ps2 games, they can develop it to play amazing new games but havent focussed on the old ones! sucks!

It won't always be so. My prediction? One day, all software will be free, we'll just pay for hardware and support.

Sony made horrific losses last year, in part because they are trying to hold onto their old business model of owning the rights to the only product people want. It's bad for development of new technology, and bad for the end users who are tied to using one system. Look at the original Playstation; copy protection was very easily removed, which meant a lot of people could get access to games for cheap. I believe it's the reason they came out on top in the console market in the 90s.

Watch this space.

The PS3 was backwards compatible, my 60GB model is. This functionality was removed to cut costs.

We'll just pay for a subscription soon, when the broadband infrastructure is much faster. HW will be free (subscription subsidised), like mobile phones and set top digiboxes. The firmware will contain common software routines.

Software will be free (subscription subsidised) executed remotely and content will be supplied as another 'pack' to your all in one digibox, whether is be the 'games pack' or the 'office pack' or the 'music pack' etc.

Storage will all be online, server farms will be the norm and home computing will all be hosted. Music, films, videos, books : all free from copyright, the artists take a share of the subscription money based on streamed plays or viewings.

Microsoft's cloud is going that way as is Google's OS and Android.
Spotify type music. Internet TV. Streaming films. TV on demand.

Convergence technology.

I have a few million pound website ideas that fit right in, just gonna find time to write 'em.

As much as It pains me to I have to agree ^^

I believe there will be essentially 2 levels of internet . Think about all the sites you go on , for the most part they are the same as what most people look at ; google has made the internet a smaller place . I read somewhere that 3/4 of all internet sites aren't listed on any search engine .

So one level you pay for like a sky package you access through something like google and the rest that lies untamed and forgotten that you have to know your stuff to access and find .

ohh and robots  yes if it does go that way then the isp's and the like will probably bump up their prices and make a killing. one way or another someone will profit from the delivery of new technology in whatever medium it happens to be. i know a lot of companies give staff discount but say you made /had some hand in making a new technology do you get it for free? does bill gates get microsoft products for free? YES! (maybe) the kid that did the ps3 says he only has one game which he barely played!
