Problems setting up my xt cantis, rear gears and front mech

I also check cable end are open by spinning a tiny Allen key in them to remove any sharp edge des after cutting.

Checked the cable ends. All ok. I stripped the levers off and recleaned and light grease on springs. Put the gold and silver springs in the right calipers :oops: as I had put the gold ones i the rear and the silver in the front. All went on great but I'm a bit stuck on getting them to balance. I'll have another go tomorrow. :D
 
If you have locking saddles you can move the saddle over a little to compensate and bring them in together

ill give that a go. getting there slowly. I'll have to post a photo of my front mech. Its got the cable screw underneath the mech as opposed the the top on most other mechs I've set up. I'm unsure of the cable routing. :facepalm: :lol:

That's just cantilevers I guess, they can be a pain in the arse....
 
IF it helps though its page 2 :) I find checking the springs themselves is an idea as they are sometimes worn or worn on one side and not giving the same strength. Its not special and can slacken over time.
Next up would be to check how your cable 'flows' and that theres plenty to allow for a gentle sweep and no tight arcs.Not too much though as the outer can flex and rob you of a bit of pull. A coated cable and plenty of slippy grease like bearing grease will help cut down on friction and help the canti springs to easily return.
With cantis it all seems to be down to consistency throughout the system.
Personally i hate the blooming things and was on hope discs within 2 years of them coming out :lol:

Rear mech- Could try releasing the cable completely but leaving it in the clamp for a quick easy tighten. Then set the limit screw to drop the mech down(make sure no years of grime build up in tight corners arent impeding it any) Cable adjust screw on the back of the mech right in and tighten the cable without putting any strain on it. Then do up the cable adjuster on the mech till its taught.
Bike on the stand and run through the gears quick as you can. Bit of gt85 into the pivots could help.
Unlikely and hands up for idiocy if im totally off the scale here but what size BB axle is it ?

Front mech
Alpine ? Compact ?
Im using a modern Sram X9 front mech which was never designed for anything over i think 42t :? but im running a 46t outer and 38t middle. The mech barely makes the change and i lose the bottom cog on the big ring. It works, but a small ring is a no no as it cant accommodate all three.

Best not to ask me why :wink:
 
I dont have to worry about the canti brakes as the boss on the forks as sheared off after the brake calpiper was locked on for some reason depsite greasing the boss. It broke trying to get the brake caliper arm off. I'm devastated after all the money I've spent. I'll strip and sell it off m,inus the forks
 
finally sussed out how to set up the brakes. I wasnt positioning the spring correctly which resulted in the brake being so crap. Pity I hadnt sussed it out before the problems of the fork.
