wee cottage in the middle of a wood  I cut my own heating

Or wear a jumper and a hat
We have no heating apart from a small log burner in the lounge. Winters are interesting upstairs, icy breath and a quick dash to the shower in the morning.

and another letter telling us our direct debit is going up.

same here

wtf??!! we're not using any more gas than previously, in fact over the summer we'll be using signifficantly less gas and electricity. We're already some ridiculous amount in credit with them thanks to their over-ambitious DD payments. What a joke. I shall be phoning up and seeing what can be done :)

Just pay for what you use. I get a quarterly bill, check reading, if it's miles out I'll give the proper reading over the automated phone service and wait for the new bill or if it's close then just pay. No hit and miss DD's

I'm on bottled gas for hot water and that is the dearest form of home energy by far!

Mine has gone up as well despite me using less. A**holes.

Energy companies have a real hold over the public, what's the alternative?

Wood burner and scrap timber from skips is the solution. People often even welcome it as it saves landfill charges.

I used to keep my house warm that way about 20 years ago. I kept a hatchet in the boot of the car. I could knock a flytipped roadside pallet into bits in about 90 seconds with practice.

A girl at work does this and luckily for her a number of trees were chopped down next to work. It kept her going all winter.
